Break the avoidance habit and find more time and less stress

Procrastination can easily creep in and become a habit. Once it does, it destroys your ability to work effectively. But it can be a hard habit to break. However, with honest self-examination and a systematic and affordable plan of attack, it can be successfully overcome.

If you decide to break the habit of procrastination, be gentle with yourself.

It can be so focused that you don't fully see all the ways you're procrastinating. Start by taking a large or difficult task and breaking it down into smaller parts that you can easily complete. It is important to remember that the most difficult or complex tasks are simply a series of small tasks.

Make a verbal commitment to someone to improve your time management skills and your desire to avoid procrastination. Allowing others to participate in your efforts by checking your progress, helping you set deadlines, or reviewing your results can be very helpful. This will likely create a commitment on your part to meet their expectations.

Sit down and create a plan to manage your time effectively. When a deadline comes up, make sure you set aside time each day to work on the project so you don't get overwhelmed by hours or days of deadlines. Learn to ask for help when you feel stressed or overworked.

Reward yourself for good behavior and goals. Don't wait until you reach the end goal, but reward yourself for your successes along the way. Make sure the reward is something you enjoy doing.

Treat yourself to a new book from your favorite author and take the time to read it. Treat yourself to a bubble bath or relaxing music. If you're used to working late, make sure you make a new habit of getting home on time every night.

By committing to breaking the avoidance habit, you'll soon be on your way to making more time for yourself and finding yourself more relaxed and productive and less stressed.
